The Susan B. Anthony House
2006-A Year of Commemoration

The Susan B. Anthony House marks the 100th anniversary of Miss Anthony's death in 2006 with a year-long commemoration of her life, work, and legacy. This commemoration will take many different forms, including new exhibits in the Visitors' Center, a historically accurate re-enactment of Miss Anthony's funeral, and the beginning of restoration of the House's interior to its appearance during the last 8 years of her life, 1898-1906. The annual Susan B. Anthony Birthday luncheon will take place February 14 with guest speaker Doris Kearns Goodwin, noted author and historian.

In early January, the House will unveil an exhibit interpreting the legacy of Susan B. Anthony created by graphic-design students from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) as part of their senior-class project. In mid-March, the House will install a new display that considers the significant influences of home, family, relationships, and education on Miss Anthony's life and work.

On March 25, the House will present the re-enactment of Susan B. Anthony's funeral at 2 p.m. at the Hochstein School of Music, formerly Central Presbyterian Church, and the site of the funeral in 1906. The event is free and open to the public. On the actual day of Miss Anthony's funeral-March 15, 1906-the church was filled to capacity (2,500, according to the newspaper's report), with hundreds more waiting outside in a snow storm to get a glimpse of the service and hear a word or two of the eulogies and readings.

Local dignitaries will portray the participants. Thanks to a comprehensive record of the service, including all speeches, readings, music, names of participants, and identity of groups in attendance, the re-enactment promises to be a stirring and inspirational event.

A number of events are planned throughout the year. Please visit the Susan B. Anthony House web site at www.susanbanthonyhouse.org for more information or call 585-235-6124.
