Celebrating Black History Month
Rochester has a strong history of diversity going back to the time of Frederick Douglass. The community’s celebration of Black History Month continues the legacy of cultural heritage.

Martin Luther King Jr. Program. January 15. www.museumofplay.org. Celebrate peace and multiculturalism in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Participate in circle dances, music, and improvisational movement from many traditions. Show what peace means to you by contributing to a colorful community mural. Listen to story readings of books by Todd Parr, author of The Peace Book and more than two dozen other stories. Watch art come to life in episodes of “ToddWorld,” an animated television program for preschoolers that teaches about acceptance, tolerance, and diversity. Rochester’s African Americans-Leading the Way. January 15. www.rmsc.org. Celebrate our community’s African American leaders and visionaries-from Frederick Douglass to Howard Coles to today’s leaders. Frederick Douglass Exhibit. www.rmsc.org . Rochester’s Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass spent 25 of his most active years in Rochester. Explore the life of this self-made leader from his humble birth as a chattel slave to his genius and celebrity as a powerful orator, courageous reformer, renowned author, newspaper editor and statesman. The exhibition presents compelling objects, documents and photographs as well as hands-on activities and recreated environments to allow visitors to “walk in Frederick Douglass’ shoes.” Located at the Rochester Museum & Science Center. 585-271-1880.

Visit Mt. Hope Cemetery. www.fomh.org. Visit the grave of Frederick Doulgass who spent 25 of his most active years (1847-1872) in Rochester. 585-461-3494.

African American Heritage Guide. www.visitrochester.com. Pick up a guide that details this region’s rich African American history. The guide features unique shopping and dining, special events such as the Rochester MusicFest, the Frederick Douglass Freedom Festival, the African Music/Dance/Arts Festival and more.
