Warm up with winter sports
People who love winter sports describe Rochester as “the place to be” for some action-packed, adrenaline-pumping fun. Dotted with an array of downhill ski runs, sparkling cross-country ski trails, ice rinks and scenic wooded areas for hiking or snowshoeing, the beauty of Coldrush Country will inspire even armchair athletes.

1. Have friends and family join you for an outdoor afternoon of building snowmen, making snow angels, and constructing snow forts. 2. Lace up your skates and head out to one of Rochester’s ice rinks for some ice skating. Many rinks offer demonstrations and clinics for skaters of all abilities. 3. Break out your tube or sled (even that old plastic red one you’ve got) and go to Ellison Park. Last one down the hill is a rotten egg! 4. Hit the slopes with your skis or snowboard at Bristol Mountain or any of the other local resorts. 5. Just because it’s a little brisk doesn’t mean the Seneca Park Zoo isn’t open! Visit the zoo to see the animals, including winter-weather folks like the penguins and polar bears. 6. The ice is hot during the Rochester Amerks hockey games. Cheer them on as they strive to capture the American Hockey League Calder Cup. 7. If the weather outside is frightful, spend some time indoors. Your local library has plenty of great books, movies, and music that you can enjoy over a hot cup of cocoa. You might even rent a fitness video! 8. Explore the local cultural arts scene, including musical concerts, theatrical presentations, and dance recitals. Many of these activities are free. 9. Visit one of the local museums that Rochester has to offer. Many offer discounted admission, special exhibits, and activities in the winter. The Memorial Art Gallery will have a Jackson Pollack exhibit running from February 2nd through April 15th. 10. Cross-country skiing or snowshoeing is an excellent way to take in the serene peacefulness and scenery that upstate New York offers during the winter months. 11. Get active and take a dance class…any style. 12. Take on some indoor projects, like cleaning the attic and basement so you’re ready to have outdoor fun when spring arrives.
